After failing to qualify for the playoffs in the last two editions, two-time champion Kolkata Knight Riders will hope to start well when it takes on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.

The team has had some issues with its batting order in the last few years and mid-way through last year, Eoin Morgan took over as captain from Dinesh Karthik. Eventually, the team missed the playoffs on Net Run Rate to SRH and RCB.

It took Sunrisers Hyderabad 10 games last year to find the right formula. Even though that’s quite late in an IPL season, they still had time to turn their campaign around and make a late dash into the playoffs for the fifth consecutive time. The usual suspects delivered, but more importantly, some new heroes emerged which convinced the management to not make wholesale changes to the squad ahead of the auction in February this year.

The likes of Jason Holder, Sandeep Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha stepped up to aid skipper David Warner and trumpcard Rashid Khan last year, whereas T Natarajan’s meteoric rise grabbed headlines. Add a fit-again Bhuvneshwar Kumar to the mix, SRH are primed to hold on to their reputation of having the best bowling attack. With the stars aligning towards the back end of the tournament last year, 2021 promises more than just a top 4 finish to cap off this successful cycle.

Kolkata Knight Riders, on the other hand, had endured a frustrating season six months ago in the UAE but their recent additions give them hope. Shakib Al Hasan, who was a part of the side that won in 2012 and 2014, is back. They have also added Harbhajan Singh to their ranks and will rely on the veteran on slow tracks. Varun Chakravarthy was a revelation last year but they will hope for more wickets from Pat Cummins up front. Eoin Morgan’s first full season as KKR skipper is bound to cause excitement and he will certainly pin his hopes on star allrounder Andre Russell, who had a forgettable campaign with the bat last time around.

When: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Kolkata Knight Riders, April 11, 2021, 19:30 IST

What to expect: The teams will be greeted by hot and humid conditions. The surface will be expected to assist turn, and as a result, expect both sides to accommodate the extra spin option.

Team News:

Sunrisers Hyderabad: Jonny Bairstow has been in blazing form but expect SRH to stick to Wriddhiman Saha as their opener following his cameos at the end of last season. Kane Williamson in the middle order will be ideal in these conditions as well. Considering the number of left-handers in the opposition ranks and with the surface expected to aid spin, Mohammad Nabi might get a go ahead of Jason Holder.

Probable XI: David Warner (c), Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Manish Pandey, Kane Williamson, Vijay Shankar/Kedar Jadhav, Mohammad Nabi, Abdul Samad, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sandeep Sharma, T Natarajan

Kolkata Knight Riders: Shakib Al Hasan or Sunil Narine is probably the one tough call that has to be taken by the Knight Riders. Harbhajan Singh’s familiarity with the conditions will keep him in the mix.

Probable XI: Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Nitish Rana, Eoin Morgan (C), Dinesh Karthik (WK), Andre Russell, Shakib Al Hasan/Sunil Narine, Pat Cummins, Harbhajan Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Varun Chakravarthy

Both KKR and SRH have a bad record at Chepauk. KKR have lost seven of their nine games at this venue with both their wins coming in 2012, including the win in the final. SRH have lost all three games they have played here, all against CSK.

In IPL 2019, Harbhajan Singh at this venue averaged 15.18 with the ball and conceded runs at an economy rate of 5.96.

No one has picked more wickets against KKR in the IPL than Bhuvneshwar Kumar (27)
